World Trade Center Site

Advertisements

The former site of the giant World Trade Center complex, now commonly known as 'Ground Zero', is located in Lower Manhattan. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and subsequent collapse of the Twin Towers, New York's tallest skyscrapers at the time, several years were spent getting the site cleared in readiness for the building or buildings that were destined to replace them.

Various designs have been tendered by many of the big names in cutting edge architecture, although the emotive nature of the subject to most New Yorkers means the choice of design is a contentious issue. Whichever design is selected the site looks set to more than double in overall size when construction begins in 2012.

There are a number of commemorative plaques and exhibits covering the history of the World Trade Center on and around the site, in fact Ground Zero has become a significant tourist attraction in its own right.
