The United Nations BuildingAdvertisements
Overlooking New York's East River is the impressive rectangular silhouette of the United Nations Building that houses the UN's international headquarters. Construction was completed in 1950 and, since then, the building has been the permanent HQ for the UN, occupying a large section of the Turtle Bay district of Midtown Manhattan. Despite its location in New York, the grounds and building itself are considered international territory, fitting for an establishment that represents the vast majority of sovereign nations in the world - the display of 'Flags of all Nations' in front of the building is seen as a reflection of this. The United Nations Building, one of many New York edifices built by the Rockefeller family and later donated to the city, has perhaps become more more well known in recent years owing to extensive coverage of the pre-Iraq War political maelstrom over UN weapons inspections. |
