Times SquareAdvertisements
Situated at the intersection of 42nd Street, 7th Avenue and Broadway at the centre of Manhattan, Times Square was named after the New York Times who formerly had offices there. Perhaps best known for its myriad neon and digital advertisements that cover many of the buildings, Times Square represents the heart of the city. As well as being an important junction point for the city's traffic and trade, the square has made its name as the location for New York's annual New Year's Eve celebrations. On every December 31st since 1907 a giant ball - nowadays illuminated and made from Waterford crystal - has been lowered on a pole to mark the start of the New Year. The ball-drop is accompanied every year by thronging crowds of anything up to a million people in and around the square, although the total was nearly double this on the eve of the Millennium. |
