The Cloisters

Advertisements

Contained within a building that itself incorporates actual pieces of medieval French architecture, The Cloisters is a branch of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art dedicated to the cultural study of the European Middle Ages.

Its varied collection - numbering upwards of five thousand pieces of art alone - includes many examples of ancient manuscripts and so-called 'illuminated' books, art and architecture, tapestries and religious artifacts from across Europe.

Aside from the collection itself, the building is a fascinating mix of a number of original French cloisters from across France transported to New York in the 1930's and grafted together into one structure.

It is situated atop a hill overlooking the Hudson River, surrounded by Fort Tryon Park with its carefully manicured and, more importantly, historically accurate gardens whose plants have been chosen according to original medieval horticultural documents.
