Manhattan (conterminous with New York County) is an island borough of New York City. It has innumerable famous landmarks, tourist attractions, museums and universities, and is a major commercial, financial and cultural center of the U.S. Manhattan is considered the focal point of New York City and the New York metropolitan region, holding the seat of city government and the most employment, business, and recreational activities. It is the nation's second wealthiest county, with the most corporate headquarters and largest central business district in the U.S. Manhattan's distinctive skyline is shaped by some of the world's tallest and most recognizable skyscrapers. The borough also has the world's largest subway system, and is unique in the U.S. for its extreme use of public transport and scarcity of private car ownership. Many significant American cultural movements have occurred in Manhattan, which has numerous galleries and cultural events. It is home to Broadway theater and some of the world's most extensive art collections, and also has areas known for upscale shopping and nightlife. The television industry also developed in New York, and most of the country's major radio, television, and telecommunications companies are based in Manhattan. |
