The Empire State Building

Advertisements

Famously scaled by King Kong in the film of the same name's climactic scene, the Empire State Building is perhaps, alongside the Statue of Liberty, the archetypal image of New York City.

Completed in 1931 the Empire State was, until the construction of the World Trade Center, the city's tallest building and has become so again since the collapse of the WTC on September 11 2001.

Lauded for its stunning Art Deco architecture by engineers and laymen alike, the building has been awarded National Historic Landmark status and even placed at number one in a list of America's favourite architecture, such is the public fondness for this iconic piece of Americana.

Visitors to The Big Apple would be well advised to take in the panoramic views offered by the Empire State's two observation decks - the larger, and busier, 86th floor observatory gives 360 degree views from an outdoor platform, whereas the smaller enclosed deck on the 102nd floor offers a less windswept experience.
