Brooklyn BridgeAdvertisements
Spanning the East River and connecting the New York districts of Brooklyn and Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge is one of America's oldest suspension bridges - the largest in the world when it was built in the 1860's. With more than a century of history - including the discovery of a cold-war period nuclear bunker beneath one of the towers - it is hardly surprising that it is officially designated a national landmark. The first of the steel-wire style suspension bridges, the Brooklyn Bridge's imposing stone support towers and swooping cables have contributed to making it one of New York's iconic images - appearing as a backdrop to any number of New York police dramas - and an integral part of the city's skyline. With its pedestrian walkways and cycle-paths taking in the breathtaking views of Manhattan Island, Brooklyn Bridge is a tourist attraction in its own right. |
