The BronxAdvertisements
The Bronx (conterminous with Bronx County) is the northernmost of New York City's five boroughs. It is the city's only borough situated primarily on the mainland (the other four being on islands), though it includes several small islands in the East River and Long Island Sound. The Bronx has many prominent shopping areas and cultural attractions, and regularly features in movies and fiction. It has also become an important center of African-American culture, and the South Bronx area is famous as the birthplace of hip hop in the early 1970s. The Bronx was named after the Bronx River, which divides the borough in two and which itself gained its title from Swedish sailor Jonas Bronck in the 1600s. |
