New York Stock Exchange

Advertisements

Very much at the centre of the global economy, the New York Stock Exchange - the NYSE - is housed on the corner of Wall Street and Broad Street.

The NYSE is generally acknowledged to be the world's most important stock exchange, with sheer volume of dollars worth of business outstripping any of its international competitors such as Tokyo or London - it is seen as an important barometer on the health of the world economy. One long-held tradition enjoyed by visitors to the NYSE is that of the ringing of a ceremonial bell at the open and close of the trading day.

Images of the seemingly chaotic scenes taking place on the NYSE's trading room floor have come to represent the cut and thrust of modern business, although the recent Credit Crunch has seen the sometimes clandestine actions of city dealers, particularly in the US, viewed with more caution.
